Technological advances in burglar alarms have helped to prevent many attempted robberies. Depending on what kind of property and contents you are trying to protect, a range of alarm systems can be obtained to suit your needs.

The following is a brief overview of some popular alarm systems available on the market.

Audible Alarms

Swipe Card EntryMost households opting for a security system will go for an audible alarm which triggers a loud sound. Alarms are available for DIY installation or you can chose to have one fitted professionally. Installation will usually cost around £500 and it is recommended to take out an annual maintenance contract which retails at around £60.

Traditional alarm systems function well as a strong deterrent and have a proven track record. However, it is worth bearing in mind that the triggering of your alarm will not automatically summon a police presence.

Legislation states that the police will only respond to an audible alarm system if they have been notified by the property owner, a member of their family or a neighbour that an attempted burglary is taking place.

Alarm Receiving Centres

A new development in alarm systems known as ARC (alarm receiving centres) has been introduced. If you opt for a monitored alarm then any triggering of the device will cause the alarm to connect to an ARC call centre where, if necessary, the police will be notified of the action.

Alarm receiving centres can be integrated into existing security systems to offer stronger crime prevention. These include

Alarm systemsVisual systems that have the CCTV cameras in place around the property. When the sensor is triggered surveillance personal at the alarm receiving centre can monitor the intruder’s movement. Depending on the severity of the break in the ARC operator can contact the police or the owner of the property as required.

• Siren systems trigger a siren that is audible inside the property. If the system detects an intruder a signal is sent to the ARC centre as an initial unconfirmed alarm. If this doesn’t deter the intruder or a second boundary is broken the police will be instantly informed. The Police will then inform the key holder that the alarm has been sounded where appropriate further action can then be decided.

If your premises are located in a remote area or if you are securing a valuable property then this added support can make a substantial difference. Monitored alarm systems retail from around £1,000 and cost approximately £200 a year to maintain professionally.
