The use of guard dogs in the world of security is becoming more and more common as they act as an extra security but are safer than the guards carrying weapons. This is because the dogs have been specially trained to act different in different situations but their main aim in any situation is to disarm the person and then to hold them in a certain position till they are properly detained. Some of the different situations and the processes in which the dogs and the handlers have to go through before they are able to work in the different areas of security;

Police force Guard dogThe training for this department is very strict and the people working with the dogs have to have just as much training as the dogs in some ways as they have to be fully trained police men/women before having the opportunity to work with the dogs. It involves training the person in how to work with dogs and be able to track missing persons from the scent on a piece of clothing etc, using the scent tracking skills to find drugs and other illegal substances (for example explosive materials), chasing down armed criminals and disarming them, controlling excessive crowds in public areas (for example at football matches) and they are occasionally used in places such as high security prisons and police stations to control criminals. If you wanted to become a dog handler in the police force then firstly you have to be working for the police force in a different department, so this means you can’t normally start working in the force as a dog handler being your first job.

In the police force you will have a large amount of professional training with a tutor then that will be followed by a months tutored on the job patrol. It is once this probation period is over that you will be qualified to patrol on your own.

Customs or excises Guard dogIn this particular form of dog handling the main duties of the handler and their dog is to find illegal materials such as drugs, weapons or things such as tobacco. As the handler will be required to read the dogs reactions very efficiently it is normally required that the handler cares for the dog in their own home so they can build a strong trust with the animal, this tends to be the case in many dog handling scenarios. There are a number of qualifications you can take to enable you to be qualified enough to work in this particular sector the normal place of work once complete are airports or ferry ports.

Each of these areas of dog handling has their own separate requirements but the most basic form of qualification for those that want to work as a normal security guard for a larger company is the National Association of Security Dog Users (NASDU). In the UK this is a legally required qualification for all that want to work with security dogs.
