Improving our home security is an issue that many of us consider but don’t always have the time or resources to carry out. By improving the security around your home you are reducing the chances of a burglar or intruder from attempting entry to your property.
The following is a guide to some improvements you can make around your home to deter intruders.
Doors
If you have an existing security system at home or are thinking about getting one then the following tips will help you to improve the security of your home.
• Letterboxes are a common point of entry for many intruders and burglars. Make sure that your letterbox is as far as possible from any locks on your door to stop intruders from gaining access. For the same reason don’t leave keys hanging on threads from the letterbox. If you don’t have much room when placing your post box you can prevent intruders from reaching through by fitting a cage or letter catcher around your post box.
• Deadlocks provide more resistance than rim latches which are commonplace in many homes. Unlike rim latches, deadlocks need a key to be opened from the interior and outside of your house. Attaching deadlocks to your front and back door are an extremely strong deterrent. Intruders would need to literally break into and then break out of a property which makes the window of opportunity to attempt a burglary even narrower.
•
Hinges are a crucial factor which determines the strength of your door. Make sure that hinges fixed to your door fitted securely in place. Long length screws further strengthen the grip your door has on the frame making it almost impossible to make a forced entry.
Windows
The following are some tips to help raise the security of your home by improving your windows.
• If you are considering fitting New Windows or replacing existing ones different options are available to strengthen the glass. While you are finding quotes ask window fitters about British Standard Enhanced Security Glass and other glass strengthening options to suit your property.
• If you are fitting new Ground Floor Windows make sure to fit locks. Any windows in accessible points which could be reached easily should also be fitted with locks. Some windows may need several locks to secure them fully, ask a professional if you are unsure how many you will need.
